The Fashion Design Program participated in the “Creative Young Designers Season 4” project under the "Pha Khao Ma Local Thai Crafts" initiative by EISA, in collaboration with Thai Beverage Public Company Limited and the NATRADA COTTON handwoven textile group from Ban Huai Sai, Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is renowned for its cultural and natural attractions, as well as its friendly locals, making it a popular destination for both Thai and international tourists.

The fieldwork provided an opportunity to study the weaving process, starting from the initial stages of spinning yarn and dyeing, to weaving and transforming the fabric into finished products. Additionally, visiting the hydrangea fields at the Royal Agricultural Station Khun Pae in Chiang Mai inspired the design process. The beauty of hydrangeas, with their small flowers clustering into large, vibrant blooms, served as the concept for designing the Pha Khao Ma pattern. The design incorporates lines that transition from small to large, with a bright blue tone. When woven according to the specified pattern, the fabric creates an optical illusion at the intersections, resembling hydrangea clusters.

For the clothing design, inspiration was drawn from the gentle yet resilient characteristics of hydrangeas. When blown by the wind, their movement resembles fluttering butterflies. Thus, the overall design features voluminous structures with freedom of movement, avoiding rigid or overly formal styles. The designs are suitable for travel, allowing for versatile mix-and-match styling that is fun and appealing to the younger generation.

The target customers of NATRADA COTTON include young individuals and tourists seeking clothing made by communities that emphasize environmental and cultural sustainability. The pieces reflect unique identities, blending fine and coarse cotton threads harmoniously, crafted by skilled artisans from Ban Huai Sai’s weaving group in Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai.
